In a recent post I wrote about kid-friendly restaurants in Northwest Arkansas, I mentioned one of our favorite places to eat, the Susie-Q Malt Shop. If you’re looking for an old-fashioned burger/shake shop, this is just the place. It so reminds me of a few places we found while driving Route 66. We love everything about this little drive-in, from the atmosphere to the menu. It’s a summer must stop place. “Serving Fresh Food and Drinks Since 1960,” Susie-Q Malt Shop is “Roadside Americana at Its Best.”
When visiting, you’ll see a large menu posted on the outside wall. They have a full menu from lunch and dinner options to cool treats and other specialties. You’ll notice authentic names for Susie-Q Special Sandwiches, like The Big Pig, which stands for a pork tenderloin sandwich with all the fixin’s. Big Daddy is another, and it’s a double cheeseburger with 1/4 lb. of shaved smoked ham and bacon. You’ll also find chili dogs, Korn Dogs (their spelling), Frito Pie, fish and shrimp baskets, tater tots, onion rings, fried okra, fried ‘shrooms, tater salad, slaw, and more. They also have a Kids Menu, serving burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, and the Korn Dog. Their burgers especially remind me of nights out with my family back when I was a kid. We used to go to a family camp in Georgia, and at night, the camp cafe would serve up their special burgers. Susie-Q’s burgers bring back memories for me, of those burgers from long ago.Just want a cold treat? You’ll find Fresh Old Fashioned Limeades, Old Fashion Sodas, Floats, Freezes, Cones, Banana Splits, and the best milkshakes around. My boys and I highly recommend their chocolate milkshake; Dan absolutely loves their vanilla malt.
Just drive on up to the restaurant, get out of your car, look at the menu, and walk up to the window to place your order. You might have a bit of a wait because they prepare everything right then and there, so it’s fresh and hot…. so worth the wait. Of course, you can always call ahead to make your order and then just pick it up in a wink.
You’ll find seating in the form of outdoor picnic tables; we usually grab our food and take it home or take it on the run. Either way, once you eat at Susie-Q, you’ll be a patron for life. Our kids beg to stop every time they see the sign.
You can find Susie-Q Malt Shop on North 2nd Street in Rogers, Arkansas, right at the stoplight.
