Let’s face it. The holidays get busier and busier every single year, or so it seems. The more my kids grow and start venturing out into various interests, the busier we become. To be honest, I wouldn’t have it any other way. But after having unexpected company show up a few times, I’ll admit that I’ve come up with a few sanity saving cleaning steps to make sure the first impression when they enter our home is a positive impression and not one that makes them want to run to the hills.
Tip 1 – If nothing else, make sure the entry or foyer stays clean…. no matter what.
When we first moved into our “new to us” home last summer, we had boxes sitting around for a few months, especially crowding our entry and living room. I’ll admit we still have a few boxes here and there. (Don’t judge; we’re super busy, and I’ll eventually get to them.) However, after having company unexpectedly show up, while I was still in my jammies at 6pm at night, of course…. I decided enough was enough. And I decided then and there that our overcrowded entry with all the shoes and the jackets and the boxes and the mess was going to remain clean even if nothing else did. Just taking that one step has led to more “clean” in other areas, as well.
Tip 2 – Do 1 load of laundry every single day.
Seriously, this will literally take a load off, no pun intended. You’ll find that doing just one load a day is not as bad as doing a mountain of laundry 1-2 days a week. It’s not such a dreaded chore, and having clean clothes and towels every day, not scrambling to dig them out of the hamper so your kids or even you have something to wear, is a good thing.
Tip 3 – Establish a 5-10 minute pick up routine every evening, especially in the main area of your home.
Keep a basket or bin handy for quick pick ups, and spend 5-10 minutes just picking up toys or whatever’s made it out to your living room, dining room, or kitchen every night. This ensures you’ll wake up to a much cleaner atmosphere, and you’ll find a much less stressed atmosphere, especially since you’re not stepping on LEGO’s in the dark. Oh yes, been there done that, and they hurt like the dickens.
Tip 4 – Don’t stress about the mess.
This is something I’ve really had to work on in myself and still am working on. Focus on what’s important during this holiday season because these moments are moments you’ll never get back with your family. Enjoy every second, and if a mess happens to present itself, enlist your family’s help to clean it up. Nothing strengthens a family more than working or playing together as a family.
Tip 5 – Keep a broom and mop handy for quick cleanup.
Sometimes vacuuming can be a bit cumbersome, especially if you’re just sweeping up a few crumbs or making a quick job of it. Keep a broom for those occasions where you just don’t feel like wrestling the vacuum out of its hiding place. Also, keep a mop handy, something like the Swiffer BISSELL® SteamBoost.
The Swiffer SteamBoost is a lightweight, easy-to-use mop that works well for all types of flooring, including tile, finished wood, and laminate floors. The mop actually plugs in too so you don’t have to worry about running out of battery power right in the middle of your cleaning; plus the cord conveniently wraps up and attaches to itself for easy storage.
We’ve been giving this mop a trial run, and our house is almost 2,000 square feet; just 10 oz. of water mops almost half of our home, meaning I only have to fill up the water tank twice…. maybe 3 times if I’m deep cleaning. One feature I really like about this mop is that it only takes 30 seconds to heat, and it’s ready to go, making it great for quick jobs.
It really couldn’t have come at a better time because we’ve had a lot of snow and ice, and we’ve tracked in the yucky salt and everything that goes along with ice on the roads. The steam cut right through the mess and left us with a shiny clean entry way/foyer. And it helped us get yet another sticker off the floor in our living room; the sticker peeled right up after a little steam action. Steam Pads are needed for the mop; they fold over attaching easily to the mop head, but no other cleaning solution is needed.
So, the key here is to stop stressing about the mess this holiday season, take a few actionable steps, and start enjoying those special moments with your family.
