Confessions of a Misfit Stylist: What Am I Going to Wear to Blogher?

If you’re going to one of the biggest blogging conferences ever, you’re probably asking that very question. I’ve been asking myself that question for the past 6 months, since I booked my ticket. Seriously, growing up, fashion just wasn’t really at the forefront of my mind (I was a tried and true tomboy)….I’ve been a bit behind the times when it comes to accessorizing and really making an outfit come together. But….I have a few tips, from one misfit stylist to possibly another….

  1. Find your own style. So, what the heck does that mean? Well, what clothes complement your personal style? What are you most comfortable in? What makes you feel like the bomb diggity? Maybe it’s a beautiful dress, or maybe it’s a pair of capris. Simply put, whatever makes you feel that way, wear it. Be YOU!
  2. Now that that’s over with, let’s get on with this post….First, take a look in your own closet. What pieces can you mix and match? You’d be surprised what awesome outfits you can come up with in pairing things together you never would have thought of.Think outside the box.
  3. Head to the mall….but don’t go after those brand new styles in the front of the store. Head to the back to the clearance racks. Right now, back to school/fall styles are starting to come out, which means summer styles (perfect for warm San Diego weather) are rockin’ the clearance racks. (My recommendations for stores? Definitely Soma Intimates (they carry such beautiful dresses that are made to fit a woman if you know what I mean….they take your curves and accentuate them; I can’t get over how feminine and comfortable their dresses are). Just a note: if you are about my size, don’t go into stores like Forever 21; it will only serve to give you a complex, which I succeeded in gaining as I jumped around the dressing room trying to get out of the dress I was stuck in. Such cute clothes, just definitely not made for me, at least until I lose about 30 pounds or so.
  4. Think outside the box. You want to be yourself, but don’t be afraid to try new styles of clothing on. You never know….you may just find some hidden part of you anxious to come out on the dance floor. Try something on you normally wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole.
  5. Even if you only buy 1-2 outfits/dresses, make them into 3-4 outfits by accessorizing. If you look, you can find belts, leggings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, flower barrettes, etc., that will bring that outfit full circle. Don’t be afraid of color either; make that black dress pop with a dash of color in your accessories. Another tip? You can even make a day outfit/dress work for night time parties, depending on how you accessorize.
  6. Shoes- the age-old dilemma….what to wear? We’re going to be on our feet all day and night! Personally, I’m taking a couple pair of dress shoes, but I also got a pair of dressy, blinged up flip flops. Black with little rhinestones. Cute, yet comfy.
  7. Shop your local thrift store. You may find the perfect retro outfit, or you may even find a completely new outfit with the tags still on….along with the leggings or belt or whatever else you need to go with it, all for only a few bucks.
  8. Finally, buy the cheap brand of Spanx at Walmart….just sayin’. They even have awesome tummy slimming tanks and leggings, and believe me, they work, and they’re pretty comfy.

So, that’s it from this misfit stylist to you. I’m considering making this a regular column. What about you? What are you wearing to Blogher? ‘Fess up! Have you ever gotten stuck in a dress before?

(This post is all me….no compensation, just my own opinions; I’ve never claimed to be a fashion guru, but I do love it!)

How to Rock the Latest Styles Without Breaking the Bank

When I’m not cleaning out the chicken coop, working in the garden or taxiing the kids back and forth to concerts and football games, I’m shopping for the latest fashions.  Like most people, my clothing budget is limited, and I want to get the most style I can from the amount of money I have to play with.

I love flipping through magazines and checking out the latest styles, and I want to be able to show my fashion sense by wearing the current trends.  That said, I’m 43 not 23, and you’re not going to find me tottering around on four inch heels with a dress short enough to be mistaken for a t-shirt.

What you will find me wearing are classic styles accented with the latest trends.  A few hot trends this year include tie dye and the military look. That doesn’t mean I’m running to the store to dress myself head to toe in camouflage.  I plan on wearing the same jeans and tops I’ve always worn.  What I’ll do is add in a few new accessories like a dog tag necklace, black leather studded belt or a camouflage scarf to dress up my current outfit.

When I shop for clothes and accessories, I always look for the best price and quality I can find.  I find off price stores like TJ Maxx have a fantastic selection of the brands I like at discounted prices I can afford. I recently found the most amazing Coach shoes at a fraction of what I would have paid for them new.  Shopping their clearance racks gets you the best prices.

I also make sure to stop into our local consignment stores at least once a month.  You never know what amazing deals you’re going to find there. It’s best to find a consignment store in a well off neighborhood to find the best brands.  I have been very lucky in finding Jones New York clothing in our local consignment store.  They have some fantastic classic styles that wear well for years.

Whatever your style preferences are, make sure you know what you have to work with before you leave the house.  Make a list of exactly what you need to buy and how much you can afford to spend.  There’s no need to break the bank to look stylish and well put together.
