Prepping for Blogher: Proofing Your Materials

This week marked a very important week in our Prepping for Blogher sessions with Debba from Girlfriendology and The UPS Store. Remember, you can find all of the sessions over on the Lovin Logistics site. I am absolutely grateful to be a part of this program; I think we’ve all learned so much about not only preparing for Blogher but about presenting ourselves as professionals.

So, what did we learn about this week? We learned about proofing materials, such a necessary step within professionalism. Last week we talked about actually writing and designing materials, but proofing is the next step. I myself wrote up and designed all my materials, but I can tell you that I read and re-read over every single word probably 50 times. I even had my husband look at them for that second eye, that second opinion. Debba says that it’s important not only to look at the placement and spelling of words but your overall message. Is it easy to read? Can brands/bloggers easily identify you and what you do? What about your grammar, your spelling? Not only all of that, but have you included all of your necessary information? For business cards, we talked about including name, business logo, blog url, email, social media, phone number, address (seems to be a bit controversial), photo, QR code, etc. As for address, just a reminder: at The UPS Store, you can get a mailbox with a real address, not just a PO Box; that way, you don’t have to worry about safety.

So, just to give you an idea of what The UPS Store can do for you in terms of printing services, check out my shop where I go from start to finish, finally handing my materials over to them for printing.

I will say that The UPS Store went above and beyond. When we noticed a slight mistake in our 1-sheets, they were quick to reprint them, same day, quick and easy, free of charge. I really want to give props to Megan who helped us with this and even cropped everything for us. For awesome service and quick printing services, I would definitely recommend The UPS Store; I’ll definitely be using them in the future for printing needs that arise because it’s so convenient. It’s a local, no hassle way to print flyers, business cards, media kits, or whatever you may need. I honestly can’t recommend them enough. The service can’t be beat; they are friendly and helpful, treating me the way a customer should be treated. I wasn’t just another number. I’ll stop gushing now, but this is truly how I feel. From start to finish, I loved that it was local, close by, and the services were easy to access both online and off.

Next week, we’ll be talking about Printing, Shipping, & Packing for Blogher. Be sure to hop on over to the other #Print4Blogher bloggers, and read what they have to say about proofing materials….you can learn right along with us.

Confessions of a Misfit Stylist: What Am I Going to Wear to Blogher?

If you’re going to one of the biggest blogging conferences ever, you’re probably asking that very question. I’ve been asking myself that question for the past 6 months, since I booked my ticket. Seriously, growing up, fashion just wasn’t really at the forefront of my mind (I was a tried and true tomboy)….I’ve been a bit behind the times when it comes to accessorizing and really making an outfit come together. But….I have a few tips, from one misfit stylist to possibly another….

  1. Find your own style. So, what the heck does that mean? Well, what clothes complement your personal style? What are you most comfortable in? What makes you feel like the bomb diggity? Maybe it’s a beautiful dress, or maybe it’s a pair of capris. Simply put, whatever makes you feel that way, wear it. Be YOU!
  2. Now that that’s over with, let’s get on with this post….First, take a look in your own closet. What pieces can you mix and match? You’d be surprised what awesome outfits you can come up with in pairing things together you never would have thought of.Think outside the box.
  3. Head to the mall….but don’t go after those brand new styles in the front of the store. Head to the back to the clearance racks. Right now, back to school/fall styles are starting to come out, which means summer styles (perfect for warm San Diego weather) are rockin’ the clearance racks. (My recommendations for stores? Definitely Soma Intimates (they carry such beautiful dresses that are made to fit a woman if you know what I mean….they take your curves and accentuate them; I can’t get over how feminine and comfortable their dresses are). Just a note: if you are about my size, don’t go into stores like Forever 21; it will only serve to give you a complex, which I succeeded in gaining as I jumped around the dressing room trying to get out of the dress I was stuck in. Such cute clothes, just definitely not made for me, at least until I lose about 30 pounds or so.
  4. Think outside the box. You want to be yourself, but don’t be afraid to try new styles of clothing on. You never know….you may just find some hidden part of you anxious to come out on the dance floor. Try something on you normally wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole.
  5. Even if you only buy 1-2 outfits/dresses, make them into 3-4 outfits by accessorizing. If you look, you can find belts, leggings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, flower barrettes, etc., that will bring that outfit full circle. Don’t be afraid of color either; make that black dress pop with a dash of color in your accessories. Another tip? You can even make a day outfit/dress work for night time parties, depending on how you accessorize.
  6. Shoes- the age-old dilemma….what to wear? We’re going to be on our feet all day and night! Personally, I’m taking a couple pair of dress shoes, but I also got a pair of dressy, blinged up flip flops. Black with little rhinestones. Cute, yet comfy.
  7. Shop your local thrift store. You may find the perfect retro outfit, or you may even find a completely new outfit with the tags still on….along with the leggings or belt or whatever else you need to go with it, all for only a few bucks.
  8. Finally, buy the cheap brand of Spanx at Walmart….just sayin’. They even have awesome tummy slimming tanks and leggings, and believe me, they work, and they’re pretty comfy.

So, that’s it from this misfit stylist to you. I’m considering making this a regular column. What about you? What are you wearing to Blogher? ‘Fess up! Have you ever gotten stuck in a dress before?

(This post is all me….no compensation, just my own opinions; I’ve never claimed to be a fashion guru, but I do love it!)
