Growing up on a farm, I learned early on the value of a good bug spray; there were times I’d be working in the fields with my dad, we’d look down at our pants legs, and our pants would just look as though they were crawling with ticks and chiggers; I remember many times having to strip down before entering the house for fear of bringing the seed ticks in with us. If you’ve ever encountered seed ticks, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
Of course, now that I have kids, I definitely have to think about this with them, as well. Jacob recently attended Cub Scout Day Camp, and he had to carry bug spray with him, preferably with DEET.
There was no way I was sending him to camp with that ingredient in his bug spray, so I searched until I found a natural bug spray in the store. It was hard finding one that didn’t contain DEET, though.
Just recently, I’ve been introduced to Green Girls Market, an organization founded in 2008 by Cheri Larson and Maureen Ford. They create eco-friendly, green products, including insect repellents. We’ve had a chance to try out their No More Bugz! Insect Repelling Balm. This balm is not a spray; it’s exactly what it says, a rub-on stick balm that you simply rub on your skin. We have a ton of mosquitoes here at night, and it’s tough to stay outside when dusk comes along. However, this stuff seemed to work to repel them away. Having suffered through malaria at age 18, I’m anxious to keep mosquitoes at bay from both myself and my children.
Just to tell you a little about the ingredients….The Insect Repelling Balm contains no “nasty chemicals or DEET.” It actually contains 7 organic essential oils including citronella, peppermint, lemon eucalyptus, geranium, and more. It also contains beeswax. I noticed the citronella scent right away, but it wasn’t overpowering; it smelled very fresh and light. It rubbed on well, and I felt confident using it on my children’s arms and legs, knowing that it contained natural ingredients. It also didn’t seem greasy at all.
One thing I liked about it is the size. It’s enough to last a little while, but it comes in a 2 oz. tube, easily carried in a purse or handbag for outings and such. I’m actually excited to carry it with us this summer when we go camping and hiking. It’s the perfect compact, lightweight size for our backpacks. One more thing….it’s supposed to deter mosquitoes and black flies….other critters too.
Not only does Green Girls Market offer a balm, but they also offer Travel Size Balm and an Insect Repelling Spray, which you can find here. You can purchase the No More Bugz! Insect Repelling Balm for $9.95. This price may seem steep, but when compared with other natural products you may or may not find on store shelves, it seems fairly comparable to me, in terms of price. The ingredients are worth it to me….but that is my personal opinion. You can find Green Girls Market on Facebook.
