We finished out Route 66 a little over a week ago, ending up at the Santa Monica Pier and Beach.
If you’ve never traveled Route 66 before, I can’t encourage you enough to DO THIS! We had so much fun! It was a blast, and we got to drive on this historic road, re-living a bit of history. Even our kids enjoyed it, and it wasn’t like a normal trip. It didn’t feel like it was taking forever because we were stopping at all kinds of places, just taking our time, enjoying the time together.
While on the way my sister and mom both told us about my grandmother’s Uncle George, who owned a place called Deer Lodge somewhere between Grand Canyon Caverns and Kingman, AZ. We were not able to find it, though; apparently, all that’s left is the concrete pads out front. I still wanted to find it, just to see where he lived and worked.
Honestly, I’d love to travel Route 66 again, stopping at other places we just didn’t have time for. We’re thinking maybe when the kids go off to college or something, we may just take off for a few weeks and really take our time.
Shhhh….do you hear that? The Mother Road is calling….time to pack up and take a drive through history!
