Book Buzz ~ Let’s Count to 100!

Let’s Count to 100!, written by Masayuki Sebe, is not your average 1, 2, 3 book….originally written in Japanese, it’s quite the colorful, imaginative, counting adventure for young minds.

Each set of pages reveals a different scene, somehow connected to both the scene before it and the scene after. Kids will have a blast counting mice, cats, moles, birds, houses, trucks, and more. Not only that, but they’ll learn to recognize groups, as each set of pages holds 100 items, all grouped into groups of 10 each. Not only are kids learning to count to 100, they are learning to count to 10….then count by 10′s to 100.

There are also hidden items within each group. At the end of the book is a hint page that asks kids if they found certain items, and they can see pictures before they look. This is one of Jaden’s favorite things to do is to hunt for hidden objects.

Of course, the book is also a story with each set of characters/items revealing comic-like conversation. All sets of items to count are also different colors, shapes, and sizes, so it makes a great educational resource for thinking skills and different forms of early learning skills.

You can purchase Let’s Count to 100! for $16.95. It’s geared toward ages 3-7. Be sure to follow @KidsCanPress on Twitter.

Book Buzz ~ Baby, It’s Cold Outside

The Christmas season is honestly and absolutely my favorite time of the year. For me, it lasts from the beginning of November until New Year’s. The tree goes up before Thanksgiving, baking becomes festive, Christmas music is on, and everything just seems a bit more cozy. This Christmas season, you may want to get little cozy yourself….grab a blanket, a cup of hot cocoa, and read a Christmas story like Baby, It’s Cold Outside, by Susan May Warren.

This story is about four people who are thrown together one winter night on Christmas weekend. Dottie is a mother still grieving the loss of her son in World War II. It seems the war is a focal point of this novel, as every person in the story has been affected by the war….it’s still quite raw amongst all the townspeoople. Other main characters include Violet, Jake, and Gordy. Gordy can’t help but want to spend time with Dottie, who has a seemingly impenetrable wall around her heart. Violet served in the war, maintaining vehicles, sometimes seeing just as much or more action than the infantry. Only thing is, her mother can’t get past the fact that Violet hasn’t been more focused on finding a husband, leaving Violet with much frustration. Jake is a man with a deep secret but also a heart full of love for Violet.

On that frigid night when the blizzard hits, all four of them are thrown together, pretty much ruining Dottie’s chances of having a quiet, albeit lonely, Christmas. When Violet runs into Dottie’s one lone pine tree, knocking it over, she’s hurt and stuck at Dottie’s. The only reason she wrecked was because of Jake who happened to be standing in the road; she swerved to miss hitting him. Enter Gordy who hears the tree crash down and comes to Dottie’s rescue, thinking that she might be hurt. From the beginning of the book, I could tell that these two couples were destined to provide a Christmas love story.

You can purchase Baby, It’s Cold Outside for $10.28 from Amazon. You can also read more reviews through Litfuse. It’s a good story to curl up with on a snowy day….provided you’re ready to find out what happens to both couples on their Christmas full of surprises and revelations.
