Melissa J’s Thoughts
I just finished watching In the Land of Odds with my two daycare kiddoes and my daughter. At 2, 2, and 3 1/2, they were pretty captivated, even the two girls. The 3 1/2 year old boy immediately asked to watch it again once it was finished, and that’s a really good sign in toddler review stats.
I thought the animation hold it’s own to what is out there for children today and I was not bored while watching it (some animated kid’s shows bore me to tears because the animation is so flat). I liked the characters, though one drove me absolutely nuts–Cali–with her “As if. . .like. . . like” Clueless-type talking. She’s fine if she’s making the kids laugh but I really hope my daughter doesn’t get any ideas watching her!
The three shows that are on the DVD have great lessons for kids on them. In the title show, Johnny goes off into the Land of Odds (think Wizard of Oz) when he gets clunked on the head. There he finds out that dependable does not necessarily equal boring.
“Growing Responsible” was about air-headed Cali shirking her responsibility and how it affected those around her, including her friends prize flowers. “Sunny Side Up” has a lesson that even adults can use! The power of thoughts, especially the thoughts we think about our friends. It’s about giving people the benefit of the doubt when we don’t know what’s going on with them. A deep lesson taught in a fun way that children can grasp.
Based on both the kid’s interest as well as the valuable lessons that the Auto-B-Good series contains, I find it a great value for the money and would recommend it to parents looking to add to their video library.
Mel’s Thoughts
“You Auto-B-Good,” a phrase from the theme song, is basically the gist of this movie. Auto-B-Good, In the Land of Odds is a cute movie for kids that involves cars, moral values, character qualities, and storylines with kid appeal. The colors in the movie are very eye-catching, as are the characters. With characters like Johnny, Cali (the valley queen), Maria, Professor, etc., it’s hard to be bored with this DVD.  It managed to keep my toddler’s attention for a little while, although maybe not through the entire movie; then again, is there anything that will keep his attention for very long right now?
There are three stories on this one DVD, and they last about 50 minutes total. The following is a short description of each:
- The Land of Odds- In this story, Johnny doesn’t want to be thought of as boring, so he doesn’t want to even try to be dependable. Everyone else is dependable, but he’d rather be different. When he journeys to the Land of Odds, though, (which seemingly reminds me of the land of Oz), he realizes that maybe dependability isn’t all that boring after all. In fact, maybe it’s a good thing.
- Growing Responsible- In this story, Cali is left to care for Franklin’s prized flowers, but she ends up pawning off the work on everyone else. However, disaster strikes, and Cali has to learn the hard way that responsibility is key in life.
- Sunny Side Up- This story embodies positive thought vs. negative thought and the power that each thought process has in relationships/friendships.
I thought that this movie was really cute, and the values it teaches are wonderful. However, at times, I did feel like the graphics were slightly cheesy, although not so much when compared with a lot of today’s cartoons. I’m more of an old school cartoon fan, I guess. I enjoyed all of the characters, except that Cali did get on my nerves just slightly. Kids think she’s hilarious, though. My boys enjoyed the movie very much, and that is really what counts. It’s definitely a movie that I can rest easy in letting them watch time and again, as well. If my kids were reviewing the movie, I’m sure they would give it two thumbs up.:)
