Book Buzz ~ Baby, It’s Cold Outside

The Christmas season is honestly and absolutely my favorite time of the year. For me, it lasts from the beginning of November until New Year’s. The tree goes up before Thanksgiving, baking becomes festive, Christmas music is on, and everything just seems a bit more cozy. This Christmas season, you may want to get little cozy yourself….grab a blanket, a cup of hot cocoa, and read a Christmas story like Baby, It’s Cold Outside, by Susan May Warren.

This story is about four people who are thrown together one winter night on Christmas weekend. Dottie is a mother still grieving the loss of her son in World War II. It seems the war is a focal point of this novel, as every person in the story has been affected by the war….it’s still quite raw amongst all the townspeoople. Other main characters include Violet, Jake, and Gordy. Gordy can’t help but want to spend time with Dottie, who has a seemingly impenetrable wall around her heart. Violet served in the war, maintaining vehicles, sometimes seeing just as much or more action than the infantry. Only thing is, her mother can’t get past the fact that Violet hasn’t been more focused on finding a husband, leaving Violet with much frustration. Jake is a man with a deep secret but also a heart full of love for Violet.

On that frigid night when the blizzard hits, all four of them are thrown together, pretty much ruining Dottie’s chances of having a quiet, albeit lonely, Christmas. When Violet runs into Dottie’s one lone pine tree, knocking it over, she’s hurt and stuck at Dottie’s. The only reason she wrecked was because of Jake who happened to be standing in the road; she swerved to miss hitting him. Enter Gordy who hears the tree crash down and comes to Dottie’s rescue, thinking that she might be hurt. From the beginning of the book, I could tell that these two couples were destined to provide a Christmas love story.

Book Buzz ~ A Lancaster County Christmas

Suzanne Woods Fisher has been one of my favorite authors for awhile. She knows how to weave a story together so that it leaves you wanting to read more.

Her latest book, A Lancaster County Christmas, is another great read that is perfect for curling up with on a cool fall day. The story follows Mattie and Sol Riehl, characters from a previous book of Suzanne’s. Mattie is heartbroken over a recent miscarriage and has given up on having more children, though it is her deepest desire to fill the kitchen table with little ones. The story also introduces Jaime and C.J., a young English couple experiencing a bit of a setback in their marriage.

One fateful snowy night, these two couples are thrown together when Jaime and C.J. get stuck in a snowstorm. Little do they realize how close of a friendship they will forge….little do they know how much healing will take place over the course of the next three days as they spend Christmas together, an Amish family and an English couple.

You can purchase A Lancaster County Christmas for $10.87 on Amazon.
