Prepping for Blogher: Making Connections & Getting Sponsorships

Can you believe it’s only 3 weeks until Blogher? I’m so amazed at how quickly time is just zippin’ on by. This lack of time before the big conference means less time to get ready….it means I’d better get on the ball. What about you? Have you made those initial contacts that go with attending Blogher? Have you pre-contacted any companies/sponsors beforehand? Do you have meetings set up? Do you have a sponsor?

Debba, from Girlfriendology, had some great advice for us this week related to making those vital connections before the big day and also working with sponsorships. Personally, I started making connections for sponsors a few months ago, mostly related to our roadtrip to and from Blogher. Getting the early bird pass to Blogher saved a lot of money, and I actually count that expense as a business investment. Focusing on sponsors for the actual roadtrip has led to many great connections. Though only partial things are sponsored, it’s still been a huge help to cut back on our expenses for the roadtrip. How about you? Do you want to go for a full sponsorship or a partial sponsorship? Either way, you need a plan, and it’s time to get on that plan.

Maybe you don’t want a sponsorship to the conference, per se, but you’d love to make a connection with a sponsor you could work with on a more long-term basis? Debba suggests contacting them to set up an appointment beforehand. Out of the 3,000 or more people who will be at Blogher, you want to be one of those that will be remembered. Find a way to stand out to the potential sponsor. What can you do for them; how can you serve them? Honestly, in my own life, I’ve often heard the word servant associated with my spiritual beliefs/values. It really does work the same way in this profession. I have to think how I can best serve the brands and bloggers that I work with.

It’s time to prepare….to KNOW without a doubt what you’re going to say to these brands and how you’re going to present yourself. Will you have materials to give them, such as business cards? What type of work/promotion do you want to offer them? This one was a bit easy for me, as I already know I want to offer the services of my group, MamaBuzz Media. But seriously….what do you want to offer? Do you want to start out working with them on reviews, hopefully building into an ambassador or even a consultant position? Think carefully about these things….but as always, make sure you only work with those companies that you can be passionate about….this is key.

Next week, we’ll be talking about materials we’ll need for the conference, like business cards, media kits, etc. Be sure to hop on over to the other #Print4Blogher bloggers, and read what they have to say about connections/sponsorships….you can learn right along with us.

Prepping for Blogher: Doing the Research

Last week we were into our third week on Preparing for Blogher over on Lovin Logistics. This week’s topic really kinda goes with last week’s topic on goals, as it covers doing the research to meet those goals.Thank you to Debba, from Girlfriendology, for providing these sessions to us, and thanks to Wendy Limauge, from Sweeties Sweeps, for teaching this session.

Research is something I can be really good at (not trying to brag, just stating a fact)….it’s just that I have to make the time to do it, and that’s what I’m really not so good at. It can be tedious, but a lot of the time it will pay off in the end, so it’s usually always worth the effort to put in the research. Especially with Blogher, it’s an absolute must to do your research before you go.

So, how do you research for Blogher? What am I personally going to research?

Personally, my goals involve both meeting other bloggers (to help grow my community as well as learn from them) and to meet up with companies who I feel will help me to meet my goals within my blog/media group. So, I’m planning to go ahead and map out the sponsors & brands I most want to meet up with, maybe even make a list in my planner for the event. Maybe start tweeting with them, letting them know I’m going to be at #Blogher11. I’d love to meet some of the brands I already work with, as well, to help forge that relationship even deeper if possible. LinkedIn is one route I plan to research through; if you haven’t gotten set up with LinkedIn, I highly recommend it. Twitter will probably be my mainstay, though. Twitter is so powerful; it’s the one social media platform I probably could not do without….just sayin’. When I went to Toy Fair this last February, everything was planned out. I had appointments made, put into my calendar, etc. I’d researched the Tradeshow floors, seeking out those companies I was most interested in working with. This is really the same.

Not only can we communicate with brands through Twitter, but we can get to know other bloggers, often putting a face to the tweets if they have their picture on their account. Of course, then hopefully, we can recognize them at Blogher when we run into them….which brings me to my next point. I definitely want to meet up with a few specific bloggers this year. They may not know it yet, but I have my eyes and ears trained to a few that I really look up to. Tweets are inevitable to at least spark conversation beforehand. Who do I want to meet? Well, they don’t know it yet, but here’s just a couple:

Media is one avenue I hadn’t thought of. I should contact media to let them know I’m going to be at Blogher??? I hadn’t even considered that!

Ok, so my list is going, and my planner is really starting to fill up. How about you? Have you made that plan yet? Have you figured out who you want to meet? Do you believe in yourself and know that anything is possible, as long as you can dream it and put your mind and heart to the task? ‘Tis true….

Be sure to hop on over to the other #Print4Blogher bloggers, and read what they have to say about doing the research….you can learn right along with us.
