Homeschool Wrap-Up for April 16

Week of April 16 Homeschool Wrap-Up
Theme for our studies this week…. We’ve been studying North Dakota and South Dakota, as well as birds. The story of immigrants from Norway was incorporated into our studies.
A great book/s we read…. Jaden and I read Lulu the Big Little Chick. It was such a cute story about a little chick who wanted to be independent and live far, far away from her mother; in the end, she realized how much she needed her mother. Jacob also read Flat Stanley’s Worldwide Adventures: The Mount Rushmore Calamity. He read it in one afternoon, so it must have been good.
One lesson or interesting fact we learned….We learned that a hummingbird weighs less than a penny, and their eggs are smaller than a dime.
We had a lightbulb moment this week…. Jacob’s been learning measurements and distances; I think he’s finally starting to grasp conversions.
As Mom/teacher, I found this week to be…. honestly, pretty good. Jacob was able to get his work done efficiently most days and not have a ton of “homework” bogging him down. I give him time limits, and he sometimes will have homework in English or Math, so he does that while I’m making supper. It just helps him to walk away from it and come back a bit refreshed, and he can usually grasp things better.
A favorite hands-on project…. We made honey peanut butter balls in history this week. Also did a couple of science experiments involving air.
Favorite extracurricular activity (if any this week)…. Last weekend we went go karting for Jacob’s birthday. It was a blast!

We laughed when…. probably mostly at Jaden this week. He’s our resident funny guy, and he comes up to us and tries to just get us to laugh all the time.
Craft idea for this week…. Dan and I made a Tron Legacy raceway/board game for the boys this week. They love it! This is something you could easily make with kids.
I am praying for my children to…. be grateful.
I am learning to…. be grateful myself.
My favorite new resource is…. Love the Backyard Safari toys that we got Jacob for his birthday. They have such a great line of toys that help kids to explore their world.

Seeing Life through the Homeschool Filter…

Have you noticed that you just don’t see things the same way now that you homeschool?

Everything about life is colored by your choice to home educate your children.  Suddenly, a trip to the grocery store becomes an opportunity to teach math.  A walk in the park is now a nature study, and snow days are an opportunity to study the weather.

It bleeds into all parts of life, even vacationing. What was once an opportunity to find relaxation and leisure is now a chance to visit historic sites, participate in scientific field study, or immerse the family in a new culture.

I find myself dreaming about our next educational opportunity or fretting over which field trip will be the best expenditure of time away from our regular lessons.  Pure joy comes from curriculum magazines arriving on my doorstep or posts from other homeschooling groups being received through email.

Confession is good for the soul.  I confess that it is as much fun learning as a homeschooling mom as it is teaching as one.  I find myself disappointed when the really cool robotics kit gets vetoed by the kids in favor of some other lesson.  I really wanted to build that robot!  I also find joy in the fact that my kids get to really focus on what matters to them, in addition to the core classes we take.

I have six-point-five more years of life as a homeschooling mom.  It seems like such a short time, and life flies by so fast!  Whatever will I do with myself when these years are passed?  What excuse will there be to learn Latin or video game programming or really study ancient history?  Will vacations be just to get away?  I can’t think about it too much, or I’ll be depressed.

The New Year has started.  For many of us, our little homeschools are getting rolling after a nice Christmas break.  This is the time when the kids are revolting against early mornings and long math lessons, the weather is cold and uninviting, activities are all springing back into action creating scheduling challenges aplenty, but don’t let that get you down.  Soon, routine will replace rebellion, and you and the kids will be back enjoying your time learning, laughing and exploring.  Treasure this time – it’ll pass before we know it.

It’ll be a sad day when the Homeschool periodical arrives in the mailbox and there’s no new year to plan for and no new lesson to learn.  God has blessed us with the freedom and the will to homeschool – enjoy my friends!  I know I’m going to love every last minute of it!
