Shamrocks, Shepherd’s Pie, & Irish Soda Bread #familymeals

With St. Patrick’s Day coming soon, it’s time to start thinking about that special Irish feast you might be making for your own little leprechauns. I’ve got a day of fun planned for the boys with crafts, baking/snacks, stories, and of course, some Darby O’Gill. St. Patrick’s Day is just a bundle of fun around our house. Tonight we celebrated a bit early, though. Check out my Whrrl; you’ll find a couple of really great recipes inside.:)

St. Patty’s Day Treasure Boxes

This morning I had no idea what we were going to do for art. Usually, I’m well prepared in advance, having made sure I have supplies and everything….not this week. I’ve been so scattered this week and so, so tired. BUT with St. Patrick’s Day being next week, I decided to have a little celebration in school today, a little Irish flair to our schoolwork. We listened to Irish music and an audio story about St. Patrick, while the boys colored St. Patrick’s Day pictures I’d printed out. Then, I found the coolest idea online….Leprechaun Treasure Boxes. I just love the boxes that Mommy Blessings made too.

What are Leprechaun Treasure Boxes, you ask? Well, I hadn’t heard of them before either. You grab a couple of boxes that you just have laying around in your garage or closet….shoe boxes, wooden boxes from the craft store, etc. In our case, I only had one box that was halfway decent, but as I searched through our pantry, I came up with a box that was holding all of our Ramen noodles. It was the perfect size. You help your kids decorate the boxes however their hearts desire. On the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, they leave their boxes out in their room. Once they fall asleep, the “leprechauns” come and fill their boxes with “treasure” and then hide their boxes. (Let’s hope the “leprechauns” aren’t on vacation like the Tooth Fairy was:)….) Anyway, the next morning they get to hunt for their treasure boxes when they wake up. How fun is that?!

So we set to work today. It was quite the fun time. Jacob just kept saying how much fun this was. We used shamrock cutouts, glitter, glue, stickers, paint, markers, glitter glue, sequins, etc….and by the time we were done, we had beautiful works of art.:) We were all covered from head to toe in glitter and glue….and Jaden had even taken his scissors and proceeded to try and make his own trach (that was a heart stopper, even though they’re safety scissors…it still scared me into a frenzy), but all in all, we had a blast doing this.

Now we’re ready for St. Patrick’s Day! We are ready for those “leprechauns” to come and fill those boxes and try to hide them…..I have a feeling it will be a long night in the Lockcuff house, trying to get two very excited, rambunctious boys to sleep, as they stay up with flashlights waiting for the “leprechauns.”

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
