Pretend & Play Pro Chef Set {Giveaway}

(This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Hannah on winning this giveaway! Thank you to all who entered.)

Since we got married, my husband has proven his skills in the kitchen; he’s quite the chef. I think maybe he’s passing his love for cooking down to my boys because they love to help out when we’re cooking, especially if it involves baking. Encouraging that love of cooking is something I want to do. I firmly believe that cooking is a universal skill that everyone needs to learn, even my boys….that way, when they grow up, cooking is something they can rely on….they can enjoy….they can use on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, pretend play is important for them too, which is where the Pretend & Play Pro Chef Set comes in. Jacob’s a little old for this set, but it’s perfect for Jaden. The set includes a skillet, deluxe stock pot, saucepan, 2 lids, spatula, wooden spoon, oven mitt, and plastic play food (like a chicken leg, corncob, carrot, and fried egg). It also comes with a write and wipe guide that helps to enhance pretend play. The pans are almost exact miniatures of adult-sized pans, with handles, teflon-like coating inside, and more.With this set kids can use their imaginations to the hilt, but they can also build fine motor skills and even practice skills such as stirring, flipping, etc. The write and wipe guide makes it even more educational with different food type activities. There are activities like picking the healthiest food choice, sorting, counting, tracing, and drawing. Because it’s dry erase, the guide can be used over and over again.Personally, I’ve always said that when we get a bit larger house, I’m going to build a small DIY play kitchen for Jaden….and put it in the kitchen so he can play while we’re making dinner. This set will definitely come in handy then….but for now, he can still have tons of fun just pretending away at the kitchen table, on the floor, or wherever his heart desires. I will say that since we’ve gotten the set, a couple of the handles have broken off of the pans….the set does not feel flimsy, and they’re built very well; we’re wondering if maybe the boys stepped on the handles….but we’re really not sure. However, we were able to glue them back on. You can purchase the Pretend & Play Pro Chef Set for $24.99 from Learning Resources; it’s geared toward ages 3-5.

Richard Scarry’s Busytown Playset {Giveaway}

(This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Mommydoll13 on winning this giveaway! Thank you to all who entered.)

Growing up, I loved books….books were something of a treasure to me, and I loved to run up to my bed (in my non-heated room upstairs in our old, drafty farmhouse), climb under my electric blanket, and read ’til the late hours of the night. Call me clueless….but I didn’t know that Richard Scarry’s stories have been around since the 1960′s. Richard Scarry has written over 300 books and sold over 150 million copies, amazing. His colorful, adorable characters include Huckle and Sally Cat, Lowly Worm, Hilda Hippo, Pig Will, and Pig Won’t.

I’ve actually fallen in love with the Richard Scarry characters, especially since we’ve been playing with 3 new Busytown playsets. The Busytown Town Hall Deluxe Playset has been full of fun for Jaden, plus it combines with other playsets to make a village, providing hours of fun. The day that we got these playsets, I can honestly say that Jaden played and played for hours that day….and he’s played with them off and on since then.

The Town Hall playset includes a double oval roadway layout, 12 roadway pieces, a couple of characters (Sergeant Murphy who patrols traffic and Hilda Hippo driving in her pencil car), along with a DVD that includes 2 Busytown Mysteries episodes.Jaden can actually place the characters and props wherever he pleases and then set up his track to circle or go through the Town Hall building. The Town Hall bulding has doors that open, the roof folds open on the taller tower, and he can walk or drive his characters through the building. It’s very sturdily made, not likely to be destroyed anytime soon….and the tracks connect and disconnect easily for kids….but they also stay together well, an important factor when trying to drive your vehicles around the roadway without experiencing frustration. You can purchase the Busytown Town Hall Deluxe Playset with DVD for $39.99 from ToysRUs.Another playset that goes great with the Town Hall is the Busytown Roadway Starter Playset. This playset includes 8 roadway pieces, Lowly Worm in his Apple Car (my absolute favorite character; the little apple car with worm inside is so cute!), a bookstore, traffic signal, and sign. The roof on the bookstore folds open, so kids can play inside, as well. The tracks connect with “most wooden track systems.” It’s a nice way to get kids started on their Busytown town or village….but it’s also a nice addition to other playsets so that kids can imagine and build and have all sorts of fun. You can purchase the Busytown Roadway Starter Playset for $19.99 from ToysRUs.Finally, Jaden’s added the Fire Station Playset to his village. Every town or village needs a fire station, right? The playset includes 8 more roadway pieces, the fire station, Fireman Pig, and a fire truck. Kids can push a button that actually launches the fire truck, also opening up the fire station doors. Also, the fire station’s roof, like the buildings described above, is removable, but the roof actually folds over on both sides to create a ladder/stairs on each side of the fire station. The roadway can be set up to drive right up to the fire station, so that Fireman Pig is ready to go when called upon. Plus kids can take characters inside the station. You can purchase the Fire Station Playset for $24.99 from ToysRUs.As a mom, I love the fact that this playset adds another dimension to playtime. Jaden can watch the DVD, but he can also enjoy acting out his own scenarios with each playset combined to make his very own Busytown, right in our own living room. It makes him use his imagination and builds those pretend play skills that are so important for kids to enjoy while they’re little. The characters and sets are adorable and colorful, very attractive. I appreciate the fact that this playset has a positive message and comes from an author who has been so successful in publishing stories that children everywhere love and enjoy. All three of the playsets above are geared toward ages 3-5.
